Walls
This steepled structure is far from sound.
Rifts and canyons and fissures surround
the foundational structure of this religion crown.
Buildings are but a temporary thing.
Beams and trusses and metal scaffolding
are only but a whisper in an infinite recounting.
Currency spent leads to more walls.
They build them to be majestic halls
to shelter the righteous and the know-it-alls.
They sing sprightly songs that say:
He is the Truth, the Life, and the Way.
But seldom has the body stirred that way.
It’s a sad thing to see:
those poverty stricken longing for Calvary –
Yet those sinless suit-tied singers see only their own need.
Irony is most suitable to describe
the things that those walls hold inside.
The body left long before it died.
Spiritual accolades are readily admired,
but dirty hands are quickly required
To be washed and hidden and banned from the mire.
Those starving, sick, and spiritless
are kept outside so as not to disrupt bliss.
But it’s something the body seems to have missed.
We’re an infinite thing, you and me,
but it seems imperative to chase the temporary.
These bodies are doomed for the mortuary.
The immaterial never seems to materialize
because we keep looking through our own eyes.
We’re trying to stargaze in a swarm of flies.
Let’s cut the ropes – it’s time
to break the pentameter of a self-centered rhyme.
Bury yourself and turn from the lie.
We’re broken beings, and we forget
that this life on earth is not designed for regret.
Past mistakes are circumstance that sins beget.
The cross is something oft misunderstood.
It’s more than a story or a structure of rough-hewn wood –
it’s the beginning, a lifestyle of servant hood.
So don’t be quick to dismiss
the gravity of redemption or the beauty of this.
We’ve all fallen short and have nothing to miss.
Our lives are more than just motions
that repeat on endless cycles of idolatrous devotion.
It’s time the body stood for more than just insincere emotion.
Learn to walk and do and say
all of the things He longs for you to obey.
It’s time we truly and sincerely followed The Way.
